What is travel medicine?

International travel for business and leisure has increased dramatically. This expanded range of travel has increased exposure to health risks that are normally not prevalent in Canada. Exposures can originate from carriers of local diseases (e.g. food handlers), water sources and insects.

Common examples include hepatitis A or B, traveller's diarrhea, malaria, TB, yellow fever, and denque fever. Failure to keep standard Canadian immunizations current can also increase health risks.

The goal of travel health is to decrease the risk of disease and to prevent serious illness while enabling travelers to stay safe and healthy.

What to expect:

• Consultations take approximately an hour.
• Travel plans are reviewed and counseling is completed on current health and safety risks associated with the area(s) you plan to visit.
• Travel vaccinations as recommended or needed, are available and can be administered onsite.
• Detailed information is provided and if required prescriptions for the prevention of malaria and the treatment for traveller’s diarrhea.
• Our clinic physician is available for consultation if required.

When to seek a consultation:

Before a trip

Some immunizations must be taken several weeks in advance of travel in order to be effective. For this reason, we recommend that consultations for travel medicine be booked at least one to two months in advance. This is especially important for an extended trip.

Travel medicine is a medical specialty that requires constant vigilance on health risks emerging anywhere in the world. Our clinic subscribes to the most current information to ensure our clients are provided with the most up-to-date services.

A referral is not needed, but we do accept referrals from family physicians.
