Occupational therapy

Live your life to the fullest. Our highly qualified OTs can help you deal with the barriers you face in performing your daily tasks and improve your physical and emotional well-being.

What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a health profession designed to rehabilitate the body and mind from injury or illness by empowering you to overcome physical, cognitive or emotional barriers so you can do more and live better.

How can occupational therapy help me?

If you are having trouble with your daily tasks OT helps to solve, prevent or minimize challenges that interfere with your ability to complete important daily activities, such as:

  • Self-care, including getting dressed, eating, moving around the house.
  • Mental health and cognitive capabilities such as depression, memory issues and multi-tasking.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) can also help with concussion management, rehabilitation from a brain injury or stroke, and chronic pain and illness management and education.

How does it work?

OTs will conduct an individualized assessment and develop a holistic treatment plan using the right approach to help overcome challenges, meet your needs and achieve your goals. Challenges are approached with the aim of overcoming them, and may include compensation, remediation and/or adaptation techniques.

When can I expect to see results?

This really depends on the challenges you face and your goals. OTs may provide you with strategies that help you see improvements immediately, while other challenges may take a bit longer to address.

What do I need to bring to my initial appointment?

At your initial appointment the therapist will discuss any medical history that relates to your condition, so please bring details of any health problems and past treatments. You are welcome to have a family member, caregiver or friend with you for support. Your first appointment may take place at a Lifemark clinic or at your home or workplace, depending on your individual needs.

Cost and coverage

Whether you are receiving physiotherapy, chiropractic service, massage therapy, occupational therapy or other types of rehabilitation services, most health insurance providers reimburse all or a portion of the fees.
