Unplug, unwind, charge down
Maintaining a proper work-life balance sometimes feels easier said than done. Much like our devices, it's important we unplug and restart to reduce the effects of overwork and burnout.
Whether you are managing a bustling clinic, or juggling projects at a corporate job, we all get bogged down in the daily tasks at work. As much as it might feel impossible, taking a few minutes every hour for a mental break can actually make you more focused and productive, and calmer.

Tips to help reduce stress and burnout
Maintaining a proper work-life balance involves more than taking a few breaks to de-stress during the ‘traditional’ work hours. With mobile technology, most of us work outside what used to be the defined 9-5 schedule.
Here are some tips to help maintain balance in your life, letting you ‘unplug and restart’ too:
- Make time for some physical activity every day. Whether it’s going to the gym, yoga, walking the dog or being part of a sports team – moving your body has proven benefits not only for your physical health, but also your mental and emotional health.
- Participate in activities that you enjoy. Make sure you find the time to indulge your hobbies – maybe you like to bake, knit, or listen to podcasts. Carving out space for whatever gives you pleasure will make you a happier and more productive employee.
- Shut down at night. Very few things are real emergencies, so when it’s time for sleep, turn off your devices. You’ll get better rest if you develop a relaxing bedtime routine.
- Try to schedule social activities with your colleagues. Sometimes we get so caught up in work activity, that we begin to define fellow employees solely by their work roles. Going to lunch, coffee, drinks or even a movie as a team can help bond you together, and appreciate your colleagues as individuals.

Maintaining a proper work-life balance is key to a happy, relaxed and productive workplace. Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes - including you!
