“I AM the master of my fate, I AM the Captain of my soul” is a phrase you will be hearing a lot in Toronto this September as the city hosts the third Invictus Games.

As a selected medical practitioner, Joy Brooks-DesBarres (CD and Physiotherapist Oshawa) will not only represent the spirit of the Games, but Lifemark as well.

Joy graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto in 1990 and continued to pursue her love of sports and orthopaedics. She has been an active Team Canada physiotherapist at several World Championships (Water Polo and Softball), Olympic Qualifications, Pan American Games (Water Polo and Softball), and is a proud owner of a Toronto Argonaut Grey Cup Ring (1991). Joy’s focus remains the same whether she is working with elite athletes, weekend warriors or injured workers; “it hurts to get better” and a good assessment and diagnosis are the cornerstone to recovery.

Since being recognized in her teens as a YWCA “Young Woman of Distinction” and selected as a Red Cross International Youth Year Canadian, Joy has continued to use her skills to help people recover and accomplish their goals; she enjoys being both a leader and part of a strong team, contributing enthusiasm, energy and expertise.

Created as a platform for personal achievement through sport, the Invictus Games demonstrate soldiers’ and veterans’ indefatigable drive to overcome and the power of sport on their journey to recovery. All competitors will be active duty and veteran service members from participating allied nations who have become ill or injured during, or as a direct consequence, of their service.

From September 23 to 30, 2017, Toronto will host more than 550 competitors from 17 nations for 8 days of fierce competition. There are 12 adaptive sports including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, swimming, track and field and golf. At the helm of this team is Prince Harry of England, who has been supporting these games since their start in 2014.

As part of the host medical staff, Joy will bring her Sports Medicine expertise to promote rehabilitation for those who have become injured- physically or mentally as a result of their service.

“The Invictus Games is about much more than just sport - it captures hearts, challenges minds and changes lives”.
